News Release, Martin’s Shooting Investigation Update,1.27.25
The Elkhart County Homicide Unit continues to actively investigate a shooting that occurred earlier this evening at a Martin’s Supermarket in which three individuals are dead, including the alleged shooting suspect, and during which two Elkhart Police Department officers sustained gunshot wounds.
Today at about 5:30 p.m., the Elkhart City 911 Communications Center received a 911 phone call of a shooting at a Martin’s Supermarket (located at 575 E Jackson Blvd, Elkhart, IN). Elkhart Police Department officers and other first responders dispatched to the scene and arrived shortly thereafter. Upon arrival, officers and first responders were directed to two shooting victims inside the store. Both of these individuals were pronounced deceased at the scene. Elkhart Police Department officers engaged the shooting suspect nearby, outside the store. During that engagement, two Elkhart Police Department officers sustained gunshot wounds, and the alleged shooting suspect was shot and killed.
Both officers were transported to local hospitals for evaluation and treatment. At last information, one officer was treated and released from the hospital and the second officer remains at the hospital in fair but stable condition.
The Elkhart County Homicide Unit was activated, per protocol, and is handling the investigation. There is believed to be no further danger to the public. The names of the victims, suspect, and involved officers are being withheld at this time, pending family notification. The Homicide Unit is actively interviewing potential witnesses and is asking anyone with further information to contact the Homicide Unit at 574-295-2825. All further inquiries regarding the status of the investigation should be also be directed to the Homicide Unit.
Chief Milanese would also like to add the following statement: “In this horrific situation, words cannot express the pain felt in our community when a tragic incident like this happens. This pain is especially felt by the victim’s families, the responding officers, the families of the wounded officers, and all the witnesses to this tragic incident. I want to thank our local law enforcement partners, including the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office and the Indiana State Police, for their support and assistance during this time. I ask for the community to continue to keep all those effected by this horrific event in your thoughts and prayers.”
